Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are a wonderful companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. They are best with well-rounded families. They are easily bored and will find other ways to entertain themselves if their owners aren't interacting with them enough. If they aren't socialized properly macaws can become aggressive and can even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly established to ensure that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who love to play, climb and interact. They must spend at least 2 to 3-hours every day outside to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They enjoy playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. harlequin macaw love visiting playgrounds and parks as much as local restaurants and bars. They are not just a great pet but also a wonderful pet for children.
Despite their adoring nature they are loud and can cause a disturbance to those who live close by. They are capable of high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which could be a problem in apartments and condos or near young children who may be frightened by their noise.
Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic meaning males and females are difficult to distinguish. Because of this the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is established pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. This is a long process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and recognize that this is a challenging task. Positive reinforcement can help to speed up the process and correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's care
Since the 1960s, activists have pleaded for Lolita to retire from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also want her relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists believed that Lolita would have a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her with high-speed circles and head-first dives that expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. Additionally, they put her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her an ancestor and plan that would eventually take her to open waters. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan was successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for 40 years. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they offer their killer whales, especially Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in 1970. Although the species is threatened and is in a tank which some consider to be too small.
Lolita's Health

Since her captor doesn't need to reveal this information, it's unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the death of orcas in captivity.
Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita many believe that she could be closer than ever to a wild life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to removing the whale of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.
The decision comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean and even meet the orca thought to be her mother. These plans came too late to save the beloved whale that passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney problem.
